Chasing the Cloud, Part 3 — Migrating Your Users and Data

Marie L. Scott, Virginia Commonwealth University

September, 2011

Solidify your understanding of cloud-based technology and how it affects you and your job. In part 1 of this three-part article, you learned the defining characteristics of clouds and their various service and deployment models, why it’s prudent to at least consider a move to the cloud, and what it might mean for you and your career. In part 2, you learned about how to assess and prepare your Domino environment for a move to the cloud and how to select a vendor. Now, in part 3, get advice on migrating your data and users to the cloud and guidance on managing and monitoring your new cloud collaboration environment.

The paperwork has been finalized and the contract with your cloud vendor has been signed. Your IBM Lotus Domino environment is moving to the cloud. As a manager of collaboration systems, perhaps you’ve been involved in other projects where users were migrated from one type of email server to another. The move to the cloud will be very similar to those projects. However, you may feel a little less “in control” of what will happen than in previous projects because you won’t manage the hardware or operating system in the cloud. Although you are indeed a little less in control in this situation, it’s helpful to keep your focus at first on planning, training, and migration — using the skills you already have to manage complex environments. As I will show, you ultimately will be able to adopt some strategies for managing your collaboration system in the new cloud environment.
To help you achieve a successful migration from start to finish, I will provide some experience-based tips, recommendations, and insights for effectively planning and preparing for your migration to the cloud. And I’ll share some management strategies to follow after migration has taken place.
This is the third and final installment of “Chasing the Cloud”. For your convenience, all three titles are listed below along with their online publication dates in THE VIEW.
